Kelly in for Lucas?
Kelly in for Lucas?
I am not one to start tactics threads - my knowledge on such matters would be limited.
But after watching Lucas pass the ball sidewards, backwards, any way but forward (even in the dying moments of the match when the crowd were screaming at him to push forward) it seems logical to me that Kelly would be excellent in that position.
Nobody gets past him easily, and he has got the pace to track back or break forward when needed. On top of that he seems to be able to read the game brilliantly and is a much better passer than Lucas or Masch ever was.
Johnson could then switch back to RB which suits a right footed player better and Aurelio to LB.
Anyone else see this, or am i being overly harsh on Lucas, again.

RE: Kelly in for Lucas?
His passing has improved enormously to be fair on him and he does get the ball forward more than he used to
But he is one of those players who when caught out of position is fucked, I think with Meirelis beside him he can get away with it most of the time
But yesterday when he went off Lucas game dropped a fair bit

He'll never be a first teamer for us if you ask me. Even though he has been for the last season and a half. You can point to him being there as one of the problems.
Don't think Kelly is the answer though. Aurelio has played there a couple of times, and is a better passer than Kelly, but I don't think either of them are going to do the job.

I think we should be calling Aquilani back asap. He's not the flop th press would have us believe, we should at least give him a go unde our new system/regime. If they don't at least try I'll be disappointed.

Hes having a good season by all accounts, and he's a great passer, but he's not the defensive midfielder we need.
RE: Kelly in for Lucas?
Lucas has been my player of the season. Seriously underrated.

Really?Lucas has been my player of the season. Seriously underrated.
He's improved, but he's still not good enough to warrant a start if you ask me. He start for Brazil in a friendly last week though. Maybe I'm blind, but I can't see it.
RE: Kelly in for Lucas?
the jury is out on him as far as i'm conserned. he really has come on this season but he's still prone to making glaring mistakes and can get caught in position at times

RE: Kelly in for Lucas?
Lucas has had a great season....he was probably the only playing well under Woy and is still improving under kenny
RE: Kelly in for Lucas?
I'm deadly serious when I say hes been outstanding. He's developed into a very clever player. His pass completion stats this season are unreal. It's his job to be the link between defence and midfield/attack and I think hes doing a great job. Great engine and heart of a lion.
RE: Kelly in for Lucas?
wouldn't be hard for him to have a good passing stat when you're doing 5 yard sideways passes all the time :-). only messing, i think he has come on leaps and bounds this season

RE: Kelly in for Lucas?
I'm with jonny here...can't believe some of the posts in this thread if I'm honest
Like I said he was the only one to play well under Roy, whatever about 5 yard passes coz masch couldn't even make those, he has been a shining light of professionalism this season and some people (players and supporters) need to take note ...ok he is no xabi alonso but then he's no micheal carrick either

RE: Kelly in for Lucas?
Was having this exact discussion with a mate over the weekend.
I'm not a Lucas fan but I can recognise that he has improved and hasn't let the negative criticism destroy him. However, I struggle to find what he brings to the team.
He's not a aggressive tackler (like a Mascha or Momo). He not a clever, positional player like Hamman. He rarely offers an attacking threat. He's not a "set piece specialist". So what does he do that couldn't be easily found in another midfielder who may have a few extra strengths to his game?
I understand that he tries hard and puts in the effort. But he's low on quality. Opta stats are a bit of a joke - especially when it comes to passing stats as they give no context. For example if a player makes 2 passes all game, both backwards to a defender - does he have a 100% pass completion rate? Not likely to happen but demonstrates the misleading nature of the stats.
I think it's become popular on certain forums and sites, not to criticise Lucas but I agree with Oh Dear(?) - I think he could be part of the problem, he doesn't offer enough to be a regular for us.
Player of the season? Everyone else has been shit. I think its more to do with us playing at his level.
As for Kelly, he doing well but has a way to go. He should not be moved into midfield.

RE: Kelly in for Lucas?
So who do we replace him with??
As I've already said he is perfect fodder for Meirelis/gerrard/ Lucas 3 man central midfield because he more often than not does the dirty work to free the other 2 up
Who would I have over Lucas
Masch- no
Momo- no
Carrick - no
Cesc - yes
Adam - yes

But I'm not sure he does the "dirty work" - he puts in effort, closing players down - I commend that. I haven't looked into who to replace him with.So who do we replace him with??

Cesc and Lucas play different roles. Cesc is a better player by far.

RE: Kelly in for Lucas?
I'd have Masherano instead of him. No doubt about it. like Vin says, it is more a sign of how average we have become more than how much he has improved.

RE: Kelly in for Lucas?
Masch was fucking hopeless at passing
RE: Kelly in for Lucas?
Maybe but Lucas isn't much better. Any chance of Barca stumping up £18m for Lucas?Masch was fucking hopeless at passing
