The obvious answer is to keep him as backup. Gomez is faster and seems great next to VVD but positioning wise if VVD comes back even with half of his pace we don't need another fast CB. His performances need to be rewarded, hopefully he uses him.
Got a feeling we're going to cash in on him.

Take sentiment out of it, he really isn't good enough. He struggled to establish himself in the Bundesliga. He gets pulled out of position a lot. Big step backwards if we keep him in the squad

I'd agree with Vin here. He's done ok and everyone is pleased for him, but isn't he 24 now and has only played this season due to injuries. Pretty sure we were getting rid of him before it all went tits up It would be a nice story to f he made it with us, but we should have better back up than this.
Playing well against Burnley last night might get him a decent contract with them.

Still stand by my point though.

Fair enough....Still stand by my point though.
Re: The Nat Phillips situation
It’s an intriguing one. He’s definitely a decent player, good pro, growing in confidence etc.
I do wonder if he could ever reach the consistently high levels required and if we’re just happy with him because he’s plugged a gap til our better defenders come back.
Short answer, I just don’t know He has done himself no harm though and could be a massive player at maybe a West Ham or a Leeds.

Bit harsh vin. He‘s good in the air, blocked a lot of goal bound balls and is a threat in the opposition box. We should at least give him a season to learn from van Dijk. They could end up bloody good together.
