Fat bastards fight back, the gym Fred

Postby Damie Karras » Thu Nov 04, 2010 6:43 am

Finally went back :icon_thumbsup:
It was like putting on an old glove tbf, I done the old 1hr 30 ish routine albeit not as intense as what I used to do

Done a 25min cardio walk on the treadmill and I was so at ease I was half tempted to start jogging
But if I done that I'd be fucked tomorrow :icon_uhoh:
Can't wait to go back now

I was going to start a thread like this. Maybe we should sticky it.

I was utterly fucked on Monday after two stints round the gym after feeling ill for three weeks or so. I only managed a mild work out tonight, but I'm in the warehouse for four days as from tomorrow, and that's good exercise on it's own. I was jogging 10K on the treadmill about five months back. I really want to get back to that sort of thing, which won't take tat long if I keep at it.

No more booze threads till Christmas.

Yeah I used to do 9km 3 times a week back before I stopped going...that was feb-mar
I'd be delighted if I can get back to doing that by Xmas

I'm half tempted to pay for 6months while I have a bit of cash

Lads treadmill running is terrible for your knees and joints.. You get a double impact on the treadmill.. As your right foot hits the treadmill it's bouncing from the left foot leaving the treadmill... Would highly recommend road running although it's obviously harder to do in the dark nights....

For cardio try 12 min on the bike it's a 4 min set repeated 3 times.. Start with 30 sec as fast as possible 30 sec rest then 20 off 20 on 20 off, 10 on 10 off for the 3rd min rest for the whole 4th minute... This can also be done on the X trainer try level 5 or 6 and give it your best

If you want any weight routine give us a shout, and I'll try my best to help you

I thought road running was meant to be worse for your knees?

I tend to do 15 minutes on the bike on the hill setting, then ten minutes on the cross trekker thing then how ever long I can last on the treadmill then off to the rowing machine for ten minutes.

I was doing that earlier this year and not even feeling knackered afterwards. I was like a heavy drinking machine.

Did you do the Dublin marathon? Was it you that said on lflolonine back at the start of the year that the marathon was your aim this year....seem to remember something, actually remember replying to the thread

I've lost the run of myself big style over the past couple of months, I couldn't afford to renew my gym membership back in march and the months since have been tough (my mum passed in June) and I've just let my go something rotten

No the road running is bad but not as bad as treadmill running try them 2 routines on the bike and X trainer it will take you 24 minutes to do both sets but give it a good lashing and see how you feel after that...

That is called high intensity interval training HIIT... It's the best way to pump the heart and give your belly a busting..

If your serious about loosing weight have 3-4 meals a day and nothing else

Breakfast; Bowl of Porridge with Water

Lunch; Salad with tuna or chicken no bread and no breaded chicken

Dinner; veg x 2.. try cut down/ out spuds and some meat try stay away from the likes of the breaded chicken options.. Chicken Kiev, chicken Maryland etc

Snack if you feel you need to on popcorn or a spoonful or peanut butter

Jeez, we all seem to be trying to get in shape again at the same time.

Joined up again couple of months back after my previously mentioned heart problems.
Started running on the treadmill and was going well 5k times coming down to where they used to be as a roadrunner (before marriage/ having kids and a demanding job)

3 weeks ago awoke with mad pain in me foot, the fuckin arch had completely collapsed.
Walking like a cripple ever since.
Specialist next Tuesday- that will be a cheap day out :sno:
Back to Swimming in the mean time, but really mis the running.

Quick question for Dr Bren- could the running machine have contributed to this or was it because i was a fat fucker exerting too much pressure on my foot during running (just under 14 st)

I thought the X trainer was for those who didn't want impact on the knees

I can't do road running at all, tried it twice and I found myself unable to pace myself as I would on a treadmill and I was fucked within 10mins
What's the heart problem Lapland?

I'd say the treadmill could of been the problem the runners you were wearing could and prob were/ are the reason for your injury... I have 2 pair of runners.. Nike Air Pegasus great for going round the gum in but give me awful pain when I road run tear my calves to bits... Asics Keyanno 15 quite good for gum but great for road running... What I'm trying to say is get your feet checked out by a specialist and ask them to recommend a runner/ shoe type for you !!!!

I wouldn't say the weight was anything to do with it to be honest Lapland.. I'm 15 stone and piss around 3 miles in under 30 minutes and I've never had trouble with my arches ... Thank God !!!

Dub sorry I missed your post there... Firstly very sorry to hear your mother passed, my deepest condolences, I know how it feels... Secondly I never done thearathon went back road running and realized how much I hate it so said no thank you to the marathon

Not sure yet.

Went through weeks of chest pains and eventually Dr Google told me i was experiencing all the symptoms of pre heart attack :scared:
Went to Doc, sent me striaght in, ECG came back clear.
Went to Cardiologist, more tests, well a stress test actually- turns out i am quite fit- he says.
I still aint satisfied though,( even though i feel much better now) but i know there was something there. Its not as if us blokes run to the doctor for every little ailment like our better halfs do.

Will give it a few weeks and see how i feel

My missus had terible migraines a few months back and they told her it was stress and put her on beta-blockers... :icon_uhoh: ... She's 35 and they had her on beta- blockers

She was then getting out of breath easily and it didn't take a genius to figure it was the pills causing exess work on her chest, I made her pack in the the tabs and she has been fine since
Even her doc told her to stick to it if she felt comfortable

something simular my girlfriend to dub. she went to the doctor suffering fro headaches and tirdness and they put her on beta-blockers as the doc said she was suffering from stress even though she said she didn`t think she was.
she took em for a week or so and they just made her lethargic all the time and eventually one morning she collapsed. she suffers from low blood pressure and the beta blockers lower your blood pressure even more
lost all faith in our ever worsening health service

Don't know if anyone is interested or nor but here's a smashing legs workout if you are looking for a workout for the gym... If your playing ball, strong legs will help improve your ability to run faster and longer plus help with a powerful shot....

Started with 5 mind on X trainer... 30 sec fast 30 sec slow

Front and back squat simultaneously x 5 Sets ... Do this in a 3 min window including you break... So start your first set at 0.01 start of your second set will be 3.01 and so on

Bike for 5 min .. 30 sec fast 30 sec slow

Leg press plate followed by jumping alternating squats followed by toe taps... Again all done in a 3 min window... X 5 Sets

Then done Russian twist , 10 each side, with 10 roll outs x 3 Sets

And finished with EZ curl bar, tricep overhead extensions and Dumbell over head presses...

Crawled out of there this morning

I'm still hitting the gym every day.....................different muscle group each time, nail that for 30 mins. That couple with footy training and 90 min match on a Saturday has me in the best shape of my life right now.

I'm trying to shed the last bit of fat around my belly and I'll be pretty damn pleased with that.

Might do a few star jumps before bed to work off the curry. 3 sets with legs only, 3 sets with arms only, 3 sets with one arm followed by 3 sets with the other arm, repeat using one leg then the other, 6 sets all together and a quick knuckle shuffle before hitting the hay.
